The architecture prgram at Kent State University enables students to aquire and apply knowledge that contributes to the betterment of our physical environments. Within a balanced curriculumn of technology, vizualization, history, theory and design studio coursework, the program offers a platform for scholarship, constructive discourse and debate. Northeast Ohio's rich history and dynamic urban landscape serve as a setting for academic learning and the study of "real world" conditions. By placing equal emphasis on the poetics and pragmatics of construction and design, the curriculum inspires experimentation, collaboration, discovery, critical thinking and innovation. The program fosters academic excellence and prepares students to be responsible and accomplished architectural professionals.

Kent State University's College of Architecture and Environmental Design offers the following accredited professional degree program in Architecture:

  • Bachelor of Science: (4 years)
  • Master of Architecture: (1.5 year)

At Kent State University both degree programs are required for those students preparing for the architectural profession and who plan to become registered architects.

In 2005, the pass rate of our graduates ranked among the

TOP 15

in the US ARCHITECTURAL REGISTRATION EXAM (84% on average in the 9 section exam, 72% being the national norm).
In one particular division of the exam, Building Planning (division # 8, the exam “architectural core”), our graduates' pass rate (81%) was higher than the pass rates of almost ALL the other 107 US accredited programs, including the most prestigious ones. Apart from the graduates of two schools which had a limited number of candidates taking that exam section, KSU graduates’ pass rate ranked

# 1 in the US

The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredits all architecture programs in the United States.

"In the United States, most state registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit U.S. professional degree programs in architecture, recognizes three types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture, and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may be granted a 6-year, 3-year, or 2-year term of accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established educational standards.

Master’s degree programs may consist of a preprofessional undergraduate degree and a professional graduate degree that, when earned sequentially, constitute an accredited professional education. However, the preprofessional degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree." (NAAB 2004)

In addition to academic coursework/degrees, most state registration boards require at least three years of intern experience in prescribed areas of practical experience. The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) has developed an Intern Development Program (IDP) which details training requirements (for additional information contact www.naab.org.
