ARCHITECTURAL STUDIES
Overview
The Architectural Studies Program provides a broad introduction to many roles creative, motivated people can play within the design professions. This degree is directed at three populations:
1) Students interested in environmental design who want a basis for further study and eventual employment in cultural theory and criticism, urban planning and design, studio art and other fields where an architectural sensibility may provide strategic advantage.
2) Students who plan to complete a terminal professional design in a second entry master degree level program and seek the broadly based education valued by such programs.
3) Students who seek an alternative option to a full studio – and technically-based professional program but who nonetheless could be excellent candidates for careers in the rapidly evolving design professions by combining architectural education with studies in other disciplines (e.g. journalism, geography, information technology, graphic design, library science, marketing, and management).
Architectural Studies Program Mission Statement
The Architectural Studies [ARCS] program is dedicated to offer a liberal arts based education on the current trends of design-related studies by linking contemporary architecture practice and theory to knowledge of urbanism, environmentalism, literature, media, cultural theory, art, science and technology, as well as philosophy, economics and political science. The program, leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies, is committed to prepare graduates to seek employment in the construction and development industries, develop careers in cultural theory or pursue a three year graduate professional program in architecture, as well as a variety of other professional programs in areas such as landscape architecture, urban planning, law, and business.
